The Ritual feels like two separate stories stapled together. Either could have been good alone, but neither really works together as a cohesive whole, despite having the same creature through both. The first half, with 4 friends taking the wrong path through an old growth forest, was the better half. The second part, with a group of death metal band members trying to raise a god, was a bit less coherent.

But even within that first half, there are some spots that are really poorly done. There are a couple of chapters where the narration jumps between first, second, and third person, all within the same chapter. I think this may have been done intentionally, to heighten the sense of confusion, but it really just dumped me out of the story instead.

The Ritual could have been better, but it was still worth the time to read.

Ritual Adam L G Nevill 9780230754928 Books Reviews

This book grabs you from the very beginning, and by the time you're finished, you're left with the most disturbing images. It's an exhausting read simply because you can't put it down. I would recommend it to those who are looking for real horror, not just gore although there's a good bit of that too. I will "see" scenes from this novel for a long, long time.

On the downside, it was a bit verbose with excruciating detail. There was a definite feeling of two novels in one, but it makes sense for the closing. I didn't really care for some of the characters in the second half. I found them maddening and annoying. I would have liked more of a focus on the myths, the creature, and the little people in the attic. Oh, my gosh that was awesome!

There were times that the novel was so intense I had to put it down. I can't even remember the last time that happened. I didn't understand some of the British slang or references, and I think the book needed a closer editing. I understand literary license, but sometimes the abundance of sentence fragments made me have to stop and backtrack for meaning.

All in all, this is the kind of book I had searched for a long time. It is terrifying. The end was satisfying, but you feel utterly sapped of all energy. I don't know if I'll read it again because I don't think I'll ever forget the ordeal of these characters. I did come to care for the characters and their experiences, and Adam Neville knows how to put you in the story. The detail engaged all of my senses as I watched this nightmare unfold page by page. Wow! This is a book that will not let go of you.
This was a great book, it is definitely worth a read if you like TRUE psychological horror and if your imagination is as freakish as mine. The greatest thing about it was the nondescriptive nature of the monster, you don't actually (for sure) know what it is or anything about it for a large chunk of the book, which (as the author is aware), makes everything much more horrifying and is the very definition of excruciatingly ominous. Amazing read, loved every creepy second!
How does Nevill keep the hits coming? He took a slightly different approach with this story, the first half is more of a psychological thriller set in the creepiest forest imaginable. Chased by an unseen horror, I wondered how Luke and his companions would make it out alive. And like the expression, out of the frying pan and into the fire, once Luke does reach what he thinks is salvation, then the fun really begins. At first, like a few reviewers, I was a bit put off by the abrupt change of pace. Although his new housemates are freaky and the use of black metal makes for a demonic setting, the pace did slow considerably and I found myself thinking, "what the ??" I finished not sure of what I had read. But I know Nevill is a master at the craft, so I gave it some time and read it again. And enjoyed it much more the second time. Now I realized why the author changed the setting, Luke's time in the forest was through, there wasn't much more the author could have done there. Luke (and us readers) needed a few answers and putting the protagonist back into "civilization" was the only way. Kudos for taking a chance, Adam, and another solid story. I will never be able to hike through the woods quite the same way again.
I'll try, as I often do these days, to keep this review as spoiler free as possible 4 old friends have gone on a trip into the Scandanavian woods hoping to rekindle the camaderie they used to share, but when they get lost the stress drives them apart rather than together. Even worse, they find a brutally slaughtered animal hanging in the trees above, and soon figure out that some supernatural force seeks to send them to the same fate! That's pretty much the first half of the book...

The second half involves one of the protagonists learning more about the true nature of the beast hunting him...as well as more about the strange people living in the woods, and their relationship to the beast. I'll not spoil the ending except to say I was surprised, and it wasn't as bleak as I expected, though not exactly "happy" either.

Anyways, the first half of the book is very good. Scary descriptions of the monster, a sense of unease as the characters encounter the old, old secrets hidden in this section of untouched forest, and most of all, a very perceptive depiction of their alienation from each other. Nevill deftly explores how and why four formerly close friends can grow apart over time, and the reader is led to feel sympathetic to all of them and their circumstances even as the guys themselves are at each other's throats. But then we get to the second half and...well, it wasn't what I was expecting. Again, no spoilers, but some "contemporary" issues, particularly involving the Scandanavian black metal culture, come to the fore. It wasn't bad, I suppose, but it was so strange I couldn't help but feel somewhat dissatisfied. So I gave it three stars, but people who are in the mood for surprises might give it four or even five.
