I got maybe 75 pages into this retelling of Tristan and Isolde and was desperately trying to read a few more when I finally gave up. At my reading level, the writing seemed juvenile, the characters flimsy and unlikable and the plot utterly confusing (dare I say nonsensical?). I could easily see my little sister (12) reading this novel though and perhaps enjoying it. It would be a perfect fit for pre-teen readers who might want a taste of classic romance or an introduction to simple fantasy. Basically, it seemed to have been written for a much, much younger audience than the typical young adult reader and was really difficult to try to enjoy.

Alright, first off I absolutely adore the cover of this novel! I think it's one of my favorites! It's so beautiful in a romantic, serene kind of way. It definitely gets an A+ in my eyes. It's everything I'd want a cover to be (for this story anyway).

I was introduced to this novel a little while ago on other book blogs. It was being reviewed and author interviews were popping up everywhere. As soon as I took a look at the cover, I knew I wanted to read it. So to GoodReads I went. The summary for Tris & Izzie had me hooked as well. I desperately wanted to read this book. So after a little research, and finally delving into the world of NetGalley, it was once and for all in my hands (or on my computer screen, I should say...).

When I opened it up, I quickly lost myself within the pages. I could not stop reading it. I was instantly hooked. I ended up sitting on the computer for hours doing nothing but reading Tris & Izzie. I finished it the same day and was a little sad when I was done. I wanted to keep reading.

There was so much about this novel to love; interesting characters, romance, magic, and teenage angst. I have to admit though, the romance and magic is what got me and held my attention. When I read the first few chapters, I was instantly intrigued by the magic and how it was used and portrayed. It made the story desirable and even more interesting to the reader.

The only thing I can think of that could have made the book better is if it had gone a little more slowly. I feel like the book itself, as well as the characters and the situations they were put in, were a little bit rushed. Everything happened a bit quickly. But hey, I don't know anything about other-wordly beasts and a magical whirlwind romance.

I loved this novel.
My husband is probably getting ready to banish me from our living room. The poor guy is trying to kick back and watch TV after a long day at work, but I’m not making it easy for him. Every time he starts to relax, I unintentionally disturb the peace by grumbling to myself and exclaiming, “Are you kidding me?” and “Wow, I can’t believe she’s such an idiot!” while shaking Tris and Izzie in disgust.

I’d say Tris and Izzie exasperated me from beginning to end, but I didn’t actually make it to the end. The sheer absurdity of this book led me to call it quits around the midway mark.

The problems with this novel begin early on. One of the things that turned me off is how Harrison casually tosses outrageous revelations and occurrences into the story, with no apparent attempt at making the transitions seem natural. For example, in the very beginning Izzie and her best friend Branna are walking through the halls of their high school, chatting about GPAs, dating, and other run-of-the-mill topics. Then, in the midst of this oh-so-average high school scene, Harrison casually drops the line, “Branna knew my mom was a witch,” completely throwing me off. It was so abrupt and nonchalant, and it didn’t really fit.

This just kept happening. Two-headed dogs, giants, bizarre relationship twists, and unnecessary truth serums pop up at random, resulting in a story that feels goofy and disjointed.

Another reason I couldn’t bring myself to finish Tris and Izzie is that the titular characters annoyed the heck out of me. Izzie is a nincompoop with a habit of slapping people across the face (again, so random), and Tristan is nothing but a pretty boy with a woefully stilted manner of speaking. His most amusing line, (“Mark, could I offer to fetch some refreshments for the group?”), delivered during a homecoming football game, had me rolling my eyes and grumbling loudly enough to cause my husband to give me the hairy eyeball.

The whole thing is so annoying and overdone that I had no choice but to set it aside. I love the legend of Tristan and Isolde, but not enough to keep reading this version of the story.

Harrison is well-known for her plot twists, so it should come as no surprise to readers familiar with her work that she has completely reinvented the Tristan legend by placing it in a modern high school. The setting provides a fresh, humorous take on an ancient tradition. At the same time, Harrison pays loving homage to the German Tristan legend in ways that many readers may not have enough knowledge of the tradition to appreciate fully. Even so, the story is accessible to any reader who might enjoy taking a turn through a high school romance that is a bit tongue-in-cheek. Very enjoyable!
